Ranwar Village is a heritage precinct in the suburb of Bandra with houses that are about a hundred years old. It retained its social character and strong sense of community till the 1960s and 70s. After that, people started to move out, builders entered the area, traffic started flowing through its narrow lanes, and its buildings ceased to be well-maintained and kept in order.
SDM Architects approached the residents of the area, and, with their support, began work to restore the area. The first task was to form a recognised organisation of residents, the ALM.
SDM Architects then proposed a multi-point agenda to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s Heritage Conservation Society to rectify these problems. The society has in principle agreed to fund some of the actions proposed. The local MP. Priya Dutt, supports this project and the local elected representative has contributed Rs. 1 million towards the project.
Since then, residents have realised that the problems faced by Ranwar occur in most of Bandra's other urban villages, and there has been interest in applying these solutions to those areas.
