The BMW Guggenheim Lab is one of our most exciting projects to date. Curated by the Guggenheim Museum, New York, and sponsored by BMW, the project aims to be a travelling laboratory of urban thought. It is a 2-month program of lectures, workshops, exhibitions, seminars, and discussions, held in New York, Berlin, and Mumbai.
The lab team had initially created a custom-designed and custom-built structure made of carbon fibre for the first two "legs" of the project. This structure was installed in New York and Berlin. But for a number of reasons, it was decided not to bring the carbon-fibre structure to Mumbai. The brief given by the Guggenheim to the architects was "to create a non-iconic building".
The architecture team - lead architects Atelier Bow-Wow of Tokyo and supporting architects SDM Architects were tasked with the design of two bamboo structures for Mumbai, a "mother" lab, the main home of the lab, and a second "travelling" lab that would move to a new Mumbai site every week!
