Indore (in Madhya Pradesh, India) is one of the cleanest Tier-1 city that we have and this sprawling low rise city skyline made it a great place for us as an architect to design a residential bungalow for a family of four people. The plot ad-measured 12 x 15 M and is part of a row house plot complex near Shalimar Apartments in Indore. The unconventional orientation of the house makes for an interesting interlocking volumetric space within the house. The three sides of the plot boundary wall are shared with the adjacent neighbors plot or house which makes it quite a challenging situation to design and build. It also posed serious questions while designing in terms of allowing natural light and ventilation through the house. During our initial studies with different building block massing experiments, it became clear that to address this issue of natural light and ventilation through the house, we will have to focus on varied orientation of the floor plan layout. With such a challenging scenario the design evolved to create a congruous spatial relation between internal and external spaces by developing an angular floor plan layout which provided for the apt opportunity to expand the external facade surface area which allowed more window openings for better light and breeze movement through different rooms of the house. A grand open central steel cantilevered staircase cuts though the heart of the house by connecting the two main floors (first and the second floor) and creating one seamless family space. A sense of connectivity is also established within the living room, drawing room, kitchen and the bedroom through the central double volume space which is used by the family for dining at different hours of the day.
